Research Interest

Synthesis of size and shape controlled nanomaterials

A variety of discoveries based on the bulk materials have largely contributed towards realizing the modern comfort of mankind. However, today’s increasing demand in achieving devices in extremely small scale suggests the need of developing functional nanomaterials. Nanomaterials possessing fascinating properties in contrary to their bulk counterparts showed prospects in potential device fabrication. Motivated by the concept of miniaturization, we have been developing functional nanomaterials with controlled size and shape in the strong confinement regime. Our effort includes the synthesis of quantum dots, nanorods, nanowires and nanosheets consisting of feature material combinations. A few examples of nanomaterials developed from our laboratory are displayed underneath.

Supramolecular assemblies at air-water interface

The fabrication of highly ordered architectures composed of AIEgens or molecular donor–acceptor pairs using a supramolecular approach is a subject of importance for organic electronics. Increasing the width of the photoactive region by forming wide area heterojunctions consisting of precisely ordered donor-acceptor components is our motivation targeting towards improving photocarrier generation. On the other hand, aggregation-induced emission (AIE) shows prospects towards light generation in solid state. However, AIE effect is commonly observed in irregular bulk form. We design controlled supramolecular aggregation of AIEgens at the molecular level using Langmuir Blodgett technique. As a consequence, a large enhancement of luminescence comparable to the bulk form can be realized. We utilize this unique feature for the fabrication of light emitting diodes with low threshold voltage.

We treat the as-synthesized nanomaterials at the air-water interface similar to the molecular assemblies. A coalescence reaction of the nanorods to nanowires by applying 2D surface pressure at the air-water interface was proposed by us. Such reactions can bring down the bulk reaction temperature to ambient conditions. We have developed high quality ultra-thin 2D single-crystalline sheets of various semiconductors with well-defined morphology via collective coalescence mechanism. Importantly, the ultra-thin sheets consist of finite band-gap, which offers device fabrication opportunities.

Nano-scale junctions with controlled interfaces

Today’s electronics is based on the function of the junctions. Our aim is to develop nano-scale junctions (heterostructures and superlattices) with controlled interfaces consisting of semiconductor nanomaterials with different band-gaps. When such a junction forms in the nsnoscale, there will be selective off-sets in the conduction and valance bands (levels) that separate the charge carriers across the interface or allow recombination in a selective way. The process is called “band-offset” engineering using “band-edge” engineering. These materials are advantageous in realizing multiple functional optoelectronic devices. We are developing such nanoscale junctions using colloidal synthesis rotes in the form of coupled quantum dots or superlattices aiming towards device fabrication, while probing the nature of the junction locally.

Devices

We fabricate devices exploring unique properties of nanomaterials or molecules and study the underlying device physics. We also explore the materials properties at the single nanomaterial level by using UHV-SPM technique. Various functional nanomaterials/molecules are being used with controlled device architecture for photovoltaic, LEDs and electro-optic applications. We are using individual and/or assembled nanorods/nanowires and sheets for transport and tunneling based devices. Designing triboelectric generator using different materials combination to generate easy electricity is another motivation of our group.
