Welcome to Mahendra
Lal Sircar Professor’s Unit
M.L.S. Professor’s Unit came into existence
in July 1987 when D. Chakravorty joined I.A.C.S. as MLS Professor. The major
emphasis of work in this unit has been synthesis and investigation of materials
which are of current interests.

Research
programmes
Synthesis and characterization of a range of
nanocomposites involving metals, semiconductors and oxides in a disordered
medium. A no. of techniques have been developed to prepare the materials.
The electrical, optical and dielectric properties have been investigated
and theoretical models applied to explain the results.
Sensor applications of some of the above mentioned
nanocomposites. Both humidity and oxygen gas sensing properties are being
studied.
Order - disorder transition in some nanocrystalline
metallic alloys. X-ray diffraction and Mossbauer spectroscopy have been
used.
Positron annihilation studies on glass-metal
nanocomposites have been carried out (in collaboration with Saha Institute
of Nuclear Physics, Calcutta).
Investigation of electrical properties of unusual
glass compositions prepared by sol-gel technique.
An inhomogeneous conductor model has been developed
to explain the dielectric modulus spectra of oxide-based glasses.
Investigation of composites of conducting polymers.
