Abstract: In this talk I will try to convey the idea that string theory emerges naturally as a paradigm from within quantum field theory. After tracing the history of the connection between strongly interacting gauge theories and string theory, I will come to recent developments stemming from the AdS/CFT conjecture. I will also outline aspects of a program to derive the string description of quantum field theories directly from first principles.
